About the Course

Overview

Increasingly, supervisors and the teams they lead do not report to the same office at the same time every day. Supervisors can no longer depend on chance meetings in the hallway, water cooler diplomacy, and/or management by walking around to engage and assess their people. This new reality is forcing management to ask different questions, like:

  • How can I know if my people are doing what they are supposed to do when I can’t see them?
  • How can I make sure that they are developing strong ties to the mission and each other?
  • How can I make sure that I am fairly perceiving everyone’s contribution?

This course equips supervisors and non-supervisors who work in distributed workplaces with the tools to be effective. Though a significant portion of the instruction will revolve around using the most common digital collaboration tools, participants also will explore various communication strategies to aid in this process.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • Navigate the communication and management challenges present when managing a geographically distributed team
  • Explain key methods for establishing and maintaining trust with those in another location
  • Identify how to manage both employees who are on site and off site
  • Establish fair accountability measures for all staff, on site and off site
  • Track/document the progress and performance of remote employees
  • Skillfully participate in and conduct meetings by teleconference and video conference
