Participants will study the concepts of race, racism, bias, and privilege and explore new ways of thinking and speaking about race. They will be able to engage in meaningful, structured dialogues and counter workplace silence with impactful intervention strategies.

About the Course

Overview

There has never been a time in America more in need of conversations about race than today. The country is facing a major public health crisis, economic uncertainty, ongoing protests of racial inequality, and police brutality against marginalized communities. Yet, people shy away in fear of not knowing how to discuss topics that raise strong emotions. This course presents a structured approach and methods for talking about race that allow for the management of emotions while exploring emotional content.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • Articulate their understanding of race, racism, systemic racism, ethnicity, and other controversial terms
  • Identify how polarized perspectives are constructed and represented and learn new ways of thinking and speaking
  • Appraise and explain the concepts of unconscious bias and racial privilege
  • Engage in a structured conversation about race
  • Manage their emotions more effectively when discussing sensitive topics about race
  • Demonstrate tools for staying engaged in the dialogue
  • Counter silence and apathy in the workplace with appropriate intervention strategies
