Leading from the Middle

This course unveils the potential within every employee to engage, lead, and influence. With a practical and case-specific approach, participants will be able to better understand how to lead from the middle based on their abilities and interests.

About the Course

Overview

Leadership and responsibility aren’t exclusive to those with a corner office. Employees of all levels can be empowered to engage with projects and teams in a capacity that reflects their capabilities and aspirations if not their formal titles. These scenarios can represent short- or-long term opportunities, but in all cases, these “situational” leaders must learn to understand leadership, influence and communication skills.

This course covers power dynamics, interpersonal communication, influence, building strategic partnerships and conflict resolution. Topics include, but are not limited to, types of power, concepts of power, sources of power, currencies of power, and using power effectively. Participants will engage in a variety of instructor-led discussions, small group exercises, self-evaluations, reflections, action planning, and more.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • Recognize one’s part in the system (position, pressures, influences, etc.)
  • Explore opportunities for exercising influence in “leading from the middle”
  • Mapping the organization for leadership and followership
  • Describe specific actions for leading on day-to-day leadership challenges
  • Identify key communication strategies for success

Who should take this course
